What Maintenance Is Needed for a Ductless System?

A ductless heating and cooling system, or a mini-split, is a splendid choice for your Youngstown home and a worthwhile investment. It offers many benefits, and if you maintain the system consistently, you can enjoy them all for years to come.
As with any heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, you need to protect your investment. By neglecting regular maintenance, you will shorten your system’s life span and significantly reduce how well it functions, as our Wm Price Heating Co professionals witness quite often.
Beyond the Annual Wellness Exam
While you should schedule regular cleaning and checkup for your unit with one of our Wm Price Heating Co heating and cooling professionals at least once a year, there are some things you can regularly do on your own.
What Maintenance Can You Do on Your Own?
Before you begin, remember to turn off your system completely—both the indoor and outdoor components—and let them sit for about 10 minutes. Be sure also to turn off the outdoor disconnect to prevent electric shock.
Here are some do-it-yourself (DIY) tasks our Wm Price Heating Co experts recommend:
• Check to be sure there is amply cleared space surrounding the indoor and outdoor units. Each unit should have ample clearance of unobstructed space around it for appropriate airflow and proper operation.
• Clean both the indoor and outdoor units. Wipe down the indoor unit with a damp, soft cloth. Never use cleaners or chemicals.
• Remove the filters and wash them with water or vacuum with a brush attachment. Remember never to use cleaners or chemicals. Mild soapy water is permissible.
• Lightly vacuum the inside and outside of the outdoor unit with the brush attachment.
For the outdoor unit, you will be cleaning the condenser and coil. After ensuring the power is off, gently rinse the outdoor unit and coil with a garden hose. Do not use a nozzle that can apply too much pressure, as that can easily bend and damage the fragile fins. The goal is to rinse off any dirt and debris. Then, wipe off any remaining dirt or debris with a soft cloth. Remember, using any cleaner or chemicals is unnecessary, as they can damage the powder coating or coil material.
If you perform this task regularly, it will be much easier to clean and will work more efficiently. It should be done once or twice a year, and the filters should be cleaned every six to twelve weeks. If you have allergies, pets, or hobbies that create dust or odors, check and clean the filters more often.
Your filter is one of the most essential parts of your ductless system. It protects your lungs and the rest of your system from dust and debris accumulation.
